Nail surgery is a procedure where either a portion or the whole toenail is permanently removed, this can be because the toenail has become painful as a result of damage, involution or an ingrown toenail. Sometimes the toenail may become infected.

At Tidy Feet we offer a package of care, including the surgery and aftercare, to ensure you have the best possible experience. The procedure is performed under a local anaesthetic by two qualified podiatrists, and the aftercare is tailored to suit your individual needs. Prior to the procedure we will discuss the expected outcomes and management, as well as talking you through the procedure itself, ensuring that the process is understood and your consent is fully informed.

It is essential for us at Tidy Feet to understand how you may be feeling, which can be especially helpful for patients experiencing anxiety about the procedure.

The procedure is performed in our Southam clinic and we reserve Tuesday evenings for Surgery, however, urgent appointments can often be facilitated.

The procedure usually takes less than an hour from start to finish, we advise loose-fitting footwear and rest immediately after.

The toe is dressed and follow up appointments arranged, in clinic, 36-48 hours after the surgery. However, we invite you to contact us if you have any concerns in the meantime.

We will provide all the dressings and a minimum of two post-surgery appointments to support the healing, as well as liaison with your doctor if required.

It is an offence to drive whilst there is anaesthetic in the foot so please arrange for a driver/lift.

The pain is almost always relieved by removing the nail portion and any other pain can be relieved with the use of over the counter pain medication.

Most people return to normal activity in a couple of days. Any strenuous work and sport should be avoided, as should immersion of the toe in water, until completely healed.

The anticipated recovery time will be discussed with you personally but, typically, is dependent on whether the whole or part of the toenail has been removed, as well as any underlying medical conditions, your activity level and age.
